Making Digital Stamps

Making Digital Stamps

By Heidi Arrowood

Creating a sketch is the first thing you need to do in order to make a digital stamp. Sketch in a sketchbook with a pencil or digitally on the iPad. Ink the image after you create your sketch. Inking is when you go over the image with a black marker or ink digitally on the iPad. Adobe ideas is my favorite app to ink digitally in. Your digital stamp will have a solid outline for stampers to color in when it is inked.

Second you want to either scan your image at 300 dpi if done on paper or email your ink from you iPad and bring into a editing program such as Photoshop. Here you can resize your image and save as jpeg file. You want your digital stamp to be at least 4x5 in size and sit in the middle of a 8.5 x11 document. Save and title your digital stamp and also put your company name, example (OwlDoodle-2cuteink.jpeg).

For your digi shop you want to create a digital stamp with a watermark. What does watermark mean? ( c) 2cuteink is an example of a water mark with the copyright symbol in front followed by the company name. The watermark goes on top of this digital stamp to prevent people from stealing the image. By creating a new layer in Photoshop you can type your information, change the opacity to 50% and create your watermark. By typing your watermark information a few times allows for the words to go across the length of the digital stamp. Moving your watermark layer on top of the digital stamp layer the words go over the digi and now you have a watermarked digital stamp. OwlDoodleCR-2cuteink.jpg is how to save your watermark.

Next, you upload your watermarked digital stamp in your shop. You can either create a shop on a site like Etsy and Art Fire or create a shopping cart through Godaddy. Etsy and Godaddy allow you to have an instant download shop, meaning the customer gets their digital stamp right away! You no longer have to manually send out each digital stamp by email. There will be a spot in both shopping carts , one to upload the watermarked digital stamp and one to upload the non-watermarked digital stamp.

Making and selling digital stamps is for everyone. Companies and artists team up to sell digital stamps and give out royalties. Artists have more control of their work and start their own digital stamp shops. Time, effort and artwork is all it takes to make digital stamps.
