Caring For Unique Bird Houses To Attract More Birds To Your Backyard

Caring For Unique Bird Houses To Attract More Birds To Your Backyard

By Amanda Baird

A lot of people like bird watching, and so they keep unique bird houses in their backyards or their gardens. The design of the house can only do so much, but the better attraction for the birds would be their proper positions and maintenance.

Every bird has its own tastes and preferences. Small birds typically prefer being in an enclosed box. Others would want a more open area where they may just socialise with other birds. Birds would generally prefer single houses with single holes over big houses with lots of bird holes.

There are a lot of types of these small boxes. From unique bird houses to the more simple ones, the key to attracting more birds is its placement. Remember not to place them too near from a feeder because it would be too populated. A tree is better, because it provides as a shade to others.

Keep in mind that bird baths and feeders should not be placed near the bird houses. Some birds don’t really like the noise and the fact that there are too many birds just outside their houses. Also remember not to face the holes of the bird houses where they would be too hot because of the sun. Some birds also prefer to blend in with the surroundings, so the colours of your bird house may also be a factor in attracting more birds to your garden or backyard.

Consider installing your unique bird houses on posts or stilts, as opposed to hanging them on trees. Moreover, always remember to clean the houses. Typically, most people choose to clean them during spring. Cleaning them regularly also keeps them well-maintained. By cleaning the houses regularly, you also ensure the health of the birds who make your houses their homes. Dirt can actually post health risks to you and your family.

Adding some bird baths and feeders also help to attract birds. However, do not forget to replace the water and to refill them on a regular basis. Stagnant water is a danger to the birds. Also remember to check the structures for wear and tear. Birds would typically avoid rundown bird houses, since they don’t feel comfortable building their nests inside.

In maintaining your bird houses, also ensure that the paint is toxic-free. Birds love to peck around, and there is a possibility that they might get poisoned if they accidentally chip off the paint from the bird house. Also remember not to use varnish, because the fumes are dangerous to both birds and their chicks.

The ventilation should also be checked. Birds will not like a bird house that is too hot or too warm. Drill some holes to enable them to be cooler inside, but be careful not to make too many holes as rainwater may seep in. A bottom hole would also provide for a drainage, but don’t make the bottom hole too big because a bird’s nest might fall off.

By making sure that you’ve positioned your unique bird houses quite well, birds will be more than happy to visit your garden and make your houses as their nests. Bird watching in your own backyard will surely be better when you get to attract a lot of lovely birds.
