Jasper diabetic dogs are taught to identify unsafe blood glucose levels in children and alert a responsible adult. These highly intelligent animals can also be socialized and trained to support autistic children and their parents. They help children cope in unfamiliar circumstances, bring balance to intense situations and provide assistance as needed.

Autistic children experience the world as a muddle of confusing perceptions. Service dogs offer a constant focus in the midst of changing stimuli. They follow basic routines, obey simple rules and communicate with unambiguous messages. When a dog remains calm in a hectic environment, the child feels less stressed and more relaxed.

A service dog allows a parent to visit public places with their autistic child and accomplish ordinary tasks. The constant presence of the dog increases the child’s sense of security, decreases stress and reduces the incidence of inappropriate or disruptive behaviors. The child can also be harnessed to the dog to prevent bolting.

The service dog can assist with auditory and visual processing problems by alerting the autistic child to sounds requiring attention or obstacles in their path. It can guide disoriented children back home. The dog can also be taught to soothe an over-stimulated child by applying pressure with its body.

Service dog training begins when they are small puppies. They are gradually desensitized to background noises and exposed to crowded public spaces to ensure that they will not become distracted when performing their duties. They undergo obedience lessons and learn general commands along with more specific skills for helping children with autism or diabetes.

It takes around nine months for Jasper diabetic dogs to complete their training. Long before they move in with their new family, they become familiar with their future handler’s scent. An article of clothing worn by the child is placed in their pen. This helps them to more quickly bond with the child and become their faithful companion.
