Some Interesting Facts About Swine Waste Lagoons

Some Interesting Facts About Swine Waste Lagoons

By Lianne Derocco

Hog or swine farms need to have waste lagoons or waste pits and these are an important part in swine waste management, which is a big part of hog farming operations. The waste lagoons need to have the proper balance because failure to do this can result to environmental problems, which can be disastrous. There is some basic information regarding swine waste lagoons.

These waste lagoons are man-made basins that also are sometimes called a manure lagoon or an anaerobic lagoon. Not only are these lagoons containment systems for the vast amount of waste produced by hogs, these lagoons also are where waste is treated. The reason why lagoons often are constructed is because these containment systems offer a low-cost waste storage option.

The waste in lagoons exists in two layers, a sludge layer and a liquid layer. The sludge layer is comprised of the waste solids, while the liquid layer is largely comprised of grease and scum. If too much sludge builds up, this is a serious problem, so you need to treat the lagoon with a product that is both effective and environmentally friendly. After all, hog waste already contains a variety of toxins, so adding chemicals does not lessen the toxicity of the lagoon.

One way to reduce sludge is to use a product that uses naturally occurring bacterial microbes. These bacteria eat away at sludge and liquefy the waste. The bacterium also increases the nutrient value of the waste, which can then be used as a fertilizer.

A product of this kind is named Lagoon Agra Sphere. This safe and natural product contains helpful bacteria enclosed in a small biodegradable sphere-shaped container. These biodegradable spheres are just thrown to the lagoons and the bacteria will then eat away at the sludge materials. This product will not only be good for the sludge but also prevents foaming and crust formation and has been shown to reduce odors and even flies.

If heavy crusting already is in place then treating the crust formation has to be done first to liquefying this in your waste lagoon. The use of helpful bacteria to eat away at the solid crust formations in the waste lagoons is done here, and one product that contains the safe, natural bacteria is Lagoon Activator. The Lagoon Activator is best used when temperatures are above 45 degrees. Before the application of this product, it is also best that the crust formation is damp for about three days.
