Painting a Story with Picture Photography

Painting a Story with Picture Photography

By Karl Berch

Candid and spontaneous images taken in a session are occasionally the ones our clients love the most. We usually ask them to bring something personal that reflects who they may be at this time in there lives. For seniors it is most frequently some sporting kit a musical instrument. They also love bringing their pets. We’ve had everything form dogs and cats to snakes and horses. For junior children it’s customarily a favourite toy that is near and dear to them.

Having some personal items available during a photograph session makes getting those candid’s a simple process.

The simplest way to tell a little story about a senior that I have come up with is to get seniors really concerned in the session. I’lI start by having them show me what they brought and then have them tell me why it is crucial to them. It’s amazing how quickly they open up when they’re talking about something they love. When they are interacting with me this way, they’re engaged and relaxed and some great candids and an interesting story can be captured.

With the more youthful children I love to put them on the set with their favorite toys and just let them play and have a great time. I try and do little directing and if their sufficiently old, I just speak with them about the toys and what their doing with them. After one or two minutes they don’t even know they are here to be snapped and a wonderful story begins to appear.

Pictures are thought to be worth 1000 words. The most valuable thing that we all share on this earth is time. It is the only thing that we will give away and never get back. While we may only be on this earth for a set time, our portraits will live on for ever. Pictures are freeze frames of moments of time you can only get back through an image. Just by picking up an old image you can abruptly appear yourself into a sea of emotion. Is capturing a moment in your life truly worth it? I suspect the answer’s quite plain.

Senior photos are instant history lessons that offer you a window to the past. Methods of life can be explored in vivid detail with a picture and your imagination. We constantly use photos that past cultures made to study what they were like. Do you have a documented history of your life for future generations?

Photographs have a novel way of capturing minute details. Video is nice , but hails in comparison to the detail you get with an easy photograph. You can capture everything down to the texture of your skin in an image. These minor details all help capture the quintessence of the picture and moment of time portrayed.
