The Best Ways To Deal With Dog Health Problems

The Best Ways To Deal With Dog Health Problems

By Geraldine Dimarco

Dogs are perhaps the animals most people would get for a pet. As such, intensive studies regarding dog health problems have been done to help dog owners from all over to understand the nature of the various diseases; and more than that - to provide the correct treatments for the specific sickness.

There is a long list of dog diseases that canines are susceptible to. Many are brought upon by infected organisms or parasites that latch themselves on the dogs system, disrupting its regular functions. There are several medicated soaps and shampoos that can combat external parasites like fleas and ticks.

Internal parasites are more dangerous and more subtle in its manifestation during the initial stages of infestation. Examples of these are the tapeworms, hookworms, intestinal worms and heartworms which are very painful for the dog. This can be avoided by ensuring a clean environment and providing a healthy diet rich in vitamins for your pet.

Viral diseases also make its way into destroying a dogs immune system. Canine viral diseases include distemper, herpes virus, parvovirus, canine influenza and hepatitis. Perhaps the most commonly known of all is rabies. Dogs catch this by being bitten by infected dogs, raccoons, bats and cats. Have your animals vaccinated for rabies regularly for you and your pet’s protection.

Any change in the dogs behavior should be monitored closely. Unless it is brought about by natural circumstances like the atmosphere, environment or having a new visitor, you must watch out for any changes because this will be indicative of canine sicknesses he already has. Correctly reading dog symptoms will help your dog immensely.

Changes like depression, restlessness, weight loss, shaking and falling, lethargy and sleepiness should raise a red flag to pet owners. Wait for any improvements for a few days and keep their environment as stress free as possible so as not to aggravate their condition. Record the period when the change began and the patterns, if any, of this new behavior. If the canine still exhibits the worrisome symptoms, go to the vet for a check-up.

Canines cannot adequately communicate whatever discomfort they may be feeling. Some breeds in particular have a high threshold for pain so finding out the source of their problem is challenging to their owner. Other than crying and yelping that dogs do, see their posture and how they carry themselves. If they are stooped forward and lick at parts of their bodies, it is most likely the cause of the pain.

Loss of appetite, hair loss, lumps and discolorations in the canines skin, coughing, vomiting and a foul smell in the ears, eyes and nose are other dog symptoms that you should be aware of. Also, dogs that are sick will strain to urinate and only in small amounts so watch out for this. Look out for any discharge in the eyes and nose as well.

Dog health problems are unfortunate but most are easily addressed and treated when you have correctly diagnosed the condition. Visit your veterinarian regularly to arrest any infection in the beginning stages and ensure your dog’s well-being.
